About the Artist

Alborosie

Alborosie, whose real name is Alberto D’Ascola, is an Italian-Jamaican reggae singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, recognised as one of the most authentic ambassadors of contemporary roots reggae outside Jamaica.

Alborosie was born on July 4, 1977, in Marsala, Sicily, Italy. From an early age he was drawn to reggae music, captivated by the rhythms, the spirituality, and the social weight that the genre carries. That fascination shaped the entire trajectory of his career.

Beginnings in Italy: Alborosie first rose to prominence in the 1990s as a member of the Italian reggae group Reggae National Tickets, performing under the name Stena. The group toured extensively across Europe and helped seed an Italian reggae scene that would later flourish.

In 2001, in a defining move for his career, Alborosie left Italy and relocated to Kingston, Jamaica — not as a tourist, but to live, work, and immerse himself in the culture that had shaped his artistic identity. He embraced Rastafari, learned Jamaican Patois fluently, and built credibility on the island the only way it can truly be earned: by living it.

In Kingston, Alborosie founded his own studio and label, Shengen Entertainment, where he writes, records, plays nearly every instrument, and self-produces his work. His debut studio album, “Soul Pirate,” released in 2008, became an instant reference point in modern roots reggae and announced him to a global audience.

His subsequent albums — including “Escape from Babylon” (2009), “Sound the System” (2013), “Freedom & Fyah” (2016), and “Unbreakable: Alborosie Meets The Wailers United” (2018) — consistently topped the international reggae charts and confirmed his status as a singular voice in the genre. His production work has also reached far beyond his own catalogue, with collaborations alongside The Wailers, Etana, Gentleman, Sugar Minott, Israel Vibration, and many of the genre’s most respected names.

Sonically, Alborosie stands out for his deep, gravel-edged voice, his uncompromising commitment to traditional roots and dub aesthetics, and his ability to play virtually every instrument on his records. His lyrics carry strong Rastafarian themes — spirituality, justice, resistance, and unity — delivered with a sincerity that has earned him respect from Jamaican legends and global reggae audiences alike.

In 2023, Alborosie brought his sound system to Paris for a session at Le Bataclan — La Pépite 47 covered the night, capturing the bass, the smoke, and the spiritual weight of one of modern reggae’s most singular performers on stage.
